(East St. Paul's) Transit problem

East St. Paul, one of five municipalities scheduled to be eliminated from the Metro area, visited Metro Wednesday to discuss public transportation problems.

Reeve N. C. Jackson told streets and transit committee he would like to work out a plan providing the municipality with service if it is out of the Metro set-up.

One of the reasons East St. Paul wants out of Metro is to avoid paying for services it doesn't receive. On top of the list is the deficit incurred by transit last year.

For the first time the deficit — amounting to $1.2 million — was paid for in 1963 by ratepayers. Only a mile of transit serves East St. Paul. Buses do not enter the other four municipalities, West St. Paul, Rosser, Springfield and MacDonald.

Coun. Albert Bennett said if East St. Paul is eliminated serious thought would have to be given to cancelling any transit service in the municipality.

Metro executive-director Elswood Bole said the one mile in East St. Paul cost transit $17,000 last year. He said the line won't be dropped until the matter is studied further.
