Three underground tube routes, spaced with passenger stations, were suggested in the Norman Wilson report on future transit developments in Greater Winnipeg.
The three routes are:
PORTAGE - NORTH MAIN - MOUNTAIN — Vicinity of Queen St., St. James, via Portage, Main, Mountain to McPhillips. Length: 7 miles.
OSBORNE - CHALMERS — St. Anne's via Kingswood to Killarney diagonally to Osborne, at Churchill, via Osborne, Memorial, Balmoral, Colony to Notre Dame; then to Powers at Sutherland, northeasterly to Main, near Redwood then passing under the Red River and easterly under Chalmers to Grey. Then to Nairn near Kent. Length: 8.4 miles.
PEMBINA - WILLIAM — McGillivray via Pembina to Mason, curving easterly to Arnold then to Fisher, under Red River and Monck to Marion, under Red and Assiniboine rivers to Main; south of Broadway, up Main to Bannatyne, curving northwesterly into McPhillips, then to Keewatin. Length: 7.75 miles.
Where bus lines will terminate at subway stations, off-street terminals for buses would be provided both to loop the bus lines and to provide free passenger interchange between subway and buses without the need of transfer tickets.
Stations would be placed slightly less than 2,000 feet apart with platform lengths of 500 feet. Portage-Main subway would cross the future Osborne-Chalmers line at Memorial Blvd. and again at Redwood and the future Pembina-William subway at Lombard Ave.
Passenger platforms would be interconnected for transfer movements by stairs and escalators.
Rail level will be from 25 to 35 feet below ground level. One of the first things to be decided would be location of a yard to service the Portage line.
Car yards have to be close to operating track to avoid too much non-paying subway structure.
