Aldermen Criticize
Street Car Service

Complaints about transit service in Winnipeg was aired Wednesday at a meeting of the city's public safety committee.

Ald. David Orlikow said the public is not satisfied with the street car service on north Main St. He also complained of the lack of service for residents in the Fleet and Grant Avenue areas.

Ald. Orlikow suggested the city transportation subcommittee meet with the Greater Winnipeg Transit Commission to discuss the complaints.

"People think they are getting poor service now than they did under the Winnipeg Electric Co.," the alderman said. "I think the city should exercise its responsibility and try and help the transit commission solve these problems."

Ald. Jacob Penner also favoured civic action and suggested that gas buses should be operated along Portage Ave. and Main St. during rush hours to relieve overcrowding on street cars.

Opposes Move

Ald. Gordon Chown took violent exception to city interference in the operation of the transit system. He said the city had no power to set policy for the transit commission.

"If we're going to do this, then lets go all the way and appoint Mayor Coulter chairman of the transit commission and appoint a couple of aldermen as members," Ald. Chown said.

Committee took no action on this suggestion.
