Power for 19-Hour
Service Available

Academy Road and Stafford St. street car services are to be replaced by trolley buses this fall.

Civic committee on public improvements approved erection of steel poles for the new service at Tuesday's meeting, after receiving a letter from C. H. Dahl, manager of transportation for the Winnipeg Electric Co., pointing out that with the provision of such poles trolley buses could begin operating before winter.

Mr. Dahl's letter stated that the company has at present ... trolley buses ... are ... use and they expect delivery of a further 10 this autumn. For the winter the new service will be supplemented by motor buses.

The trolley buses for the time being will operate between the downtown area to the end of the existing car lines.

(The) proposed route, which requires the installation of overhead lines is south of Vaughan st. between Graham and St. Mary Aves. along St. Mary Ave., to Colony St., south of Colony to Broadway, along Broadway to Sherbrook St., to Maryland Bridge via Sherbrook St. and Cornish Ave., along Academy Road to Kenaston Blvd.

The Stafford St. buses will follow Stafford St. from Maryland Bridge to the Lorette Loop.

The manager of transportation's letter added that although the sub-station to provide power for the proposed line will not be completed until next year, sufficient power from existing sources is available to provide service for 19 hours per day.

It is too late this year to remove the existing street car tracks, but this work will be carried out early next spring.

In answer to criticism of the rerouting of the Mountain Ave. buses at a previous meeting, Mr. Dahl said that the routing to make the turn at Mountain and Main had been adopted because it was the least dangerous.

Ald. Stepnuk reiterated his criticism that the present route took the bus past a school three times, whereas if the bus went north on Charles and then along St. John's Ave. to Main St. it would only necessitate passing the school twice.

Ald. Hallonquist, chairman of the committee, advised Ald. Stepnuk to make a report of his suggested alterations to existing route for the Advisory Traffic Commission.
