Increased W.E.Co. Earnings Assist City Budgeteers

Earnings of the Winnipeg Electric company were up almost half a million dollars in 1941 from their 1940 level and the company would consequently pay higher taxes in 1942, the city treasurer informed the city finance committee Friday.

The company earnings in 1941 were $3,234,801 compared with $2,791,582 the previous year, a difference of $443,219. Payment of the five percent tax on gross earnings levied on the company will yield $161,740 in 1942 compared with $139,579 in 1941.

The $20 tax on street cars will yield $6,470 this year compared with $6,180 last year. This will bring total tax payments of the company in 1942 to $168,480 compared with $145,759 in 1941.

Preliminary estimates prepared by the city treasurer figured the company's 1942 tax payment at $160,000, so it will now be possible to increase this figure by $8,000.
