Elimination of street cars on Logan Avenue from Arlington St. to Main was announced by Edward Anderson, K.C., president of the Winnipeg Electric company, in a letter to the public safety committee, Wednesday. Rerouting of half the Notre Dame trams and the operation of buses is designed to replace the former service. The change is necessitated principally because of the bad condition of the Logan Ave. pavement.
Changes i the Corydon and Stafford routes to provide greater regularity of service and reduce the interval between cars were also re- (unreadable) Mr. Anderson said.
C. H. Dahl, vice-president in charge of operation of the tram company, said today that the changes would probably come into effect on June 1. Mr. Anderson's letter to the committee was merely for its information and the change would go into effect unless opposition was registered.
Under the new plan, which is proposed for the summer schedule, buses will operate in place of cars on Logan from Arlington to Main. Half the number of cars at present running on the Notre Dame route will turn north at Arlington going west to Keewatin on Logan. The other half will proceed on the Notre Dame route to Worth St., at present.
During peaks the Logan buses would run independently of other routes, but during off-peak hours the Logan Ave. buses would be joined with the Arlington at buses making a direct bus route from Arlington and Portage by way of Portage to Logan and Logan to Main.
Mr. Anderson said that an effort would probably be made to use the Logan Ave. tracks for C.P.R. shop specials and for cars going into service. No reduction in labor would result from the changes.
Opposition was expressed to the recommendations by members of the committee, who felt that north end users of Logan Ave. cars, accustomed to transfer at Main St., would be inconvenienced. A transportation sub-committee, composed of Aldermen Borrowman, Simpkin and Barry, will investigate and make a report.
No discussion took place on the Corydon route changes. Corydon and Stafford routes are to be divided into two parts, the division being made at Portage Ave, and Main St. The Corydon-Osborne-Broadway-Main route will terminate at the Garry loop. The cars operating on Stafford-Academy-Sherbrook will be joined with St. Boniface. Mr. Anderson anticipated greater regularity of service and shorter intervals as a result.
