Why are you doing this website?
"Because knowledge is truth." Really. By presenting transportation documents, newspaper articles I leave it up to the website visitor to decide for himself the issue of rapid transit for Winnipeg.
How long have you been doing this?
UWTO started in August 1996 as one page of transit facts from my personal site on BlueSky Community Network. Although I had the idea for a website like this about two years earlier. I just wanted to wait for web standards to settle a bit. Nowadays we have quite a toolset, with XHTML (for content markup), and CSS (for styling).
Do you get paid for maintaining uwto.org?
I realize this question typically comes from independent conservative types, who like to make a profit on things, but the answer it's all done in my spare time.
What do you use to code your web documents?
I use KompoZer which is based on the old Netscape Composer from '96, but will be expanded in the next few years to compete with Dreamweaver and MS Front Page.
What is your philosophy on coding HTML pages?
I try to keep pages loading as quickly as possible, and this is done by NOT using Javascript, Java, etc...I also keep up with the latest in HTML and CSS standards and techniques that are conformant with the World Wide Web Consortium.
Do you support Bus Rapid Transit as an option for rapid transit in Winnipeg?
No. Absolutely not. In some cases though it may work if it were a "freeway bus" like that proposed in W.A.T.S. and only when it terminates at one or more LRT/subway stations. This is opposite the way that Winnipeg Transit wants it, as on curbside lanes. In short order, BRT SUCKS.
Do you support Light Rail Transit as an option for rapid transit in Winnipeg?
After transcribing the 1959 Wilson subway report in 2004, and then later that year having Dallas Hansen convince me that it is a better plan than fitting LRT using the Southwest Transit Corridor plan, I'm more for subways now. Keep in mind that when I started this whole rapid transit for Winnipeg thing, I was just 12 years old (1978), I was not aware of any subway plan for Winnipeg back then.
What do you think of the current rapid transit plan, put forth by Russ Wyatt's Rapid Transit Task Force?
Part of the current plan was Coun Wyatt's, while parts also come from Winnipeg Transit itself. WT was evidently involved (again!!!) in the current plan, something that I warned Council about last September when they cancelled Glen Murray's, er WT's previous busway plans.
Why isn't there a search engine on your page, it would make searching for documents in uwto.org much easier.
I don't have the skills right at the
moment to do this. It requires a CGI script, Javascript, etc... Instead
what you can do is in Google, start your search with site:uwto.org
then a space, and then type what you're searching for on my site.
