Montreal, St. John's and Toronto are the most expensive Canadian cities in which to operated a car — almost $1,700 a year more costly than Winnipeg, according to a survey for Runzheimer Canada.
Driving a typical 1999 mid-size car costs $9,874 a year in the Montreal area, the management consultancy reports. The Newfoundland capital is close behind at $9,840, with Toronto at $9,655.
At the other end of the scale are Winnipeg at $8,198, Edmonton at $8,278 and Regina at $8,333.
The calculations, based on a Ford Taurus, include ownership costs, insurance, depreciation, financing, licensing, fuel, oil, tires and maintenance.
"The three highest-cost cities all share one common liability — high auto insurance rates," Runzheimer says.
Maintenance costs also vary, from 3.05 cents a kilometre in Toronto and Vancouver to a low of 2.46 cents a kilometre in Charlottetown.
