As I read Plan for Exchange dead in Wednesday's paper, I experienced a variety of emotions including sadness and disgust. Without knowing the details of a doubtless complex matter, it seems nevertheless to be another lost opportunity. Due to what? Lack of foresight and vision, small mindedness, favouritism, penny pinching, or all of these and more?
I say another because it seems to happen over and over again, from squeezing the MTS Centre into too small a site, leaving it just a couple of thousand seats short of ever attracting an NHL franchise, to signing a non-compete agreement that has ramifications for a new football stadium, to leaving our road and transit network stuck in the 1960s, to the neglect of our infrastructure including Assiniboine Park in pursuit of lower taxes instead, and on and on and on.
This is simply further evidence of the need to institute a limited term in office for city councillors. At the least, that would hold the promise of change for the better.
