To Kristy Hoyak (Try riding this bus, mayor, Sept. 18, page A19) and others who are threatening to leave Winnipeg upon finishing their education if we don't pursue Mr. Murray's plan for "rapid" transit: What do you think that plan will provide?
You will still be riding a bus — on designated lanes, presumably, but still a bus. as rapid transt will not reduce the number of students traveling to the U of M, the bus will still be crowded. and if a lane on Pembina Highway is designated buses only, then the traffic tie-ups will be horrendous!
People seem to think this mode of bus travel will be rapid — I doubt it will save much time and/or crowding.
Maybe some people are caught up in the vision of the "glamour" of rapid transit without really knowing what this plan actually is, and how very, very much it would cost, and most importantly, can we, at this time, even afford it!
