City Could Get Subway And Expressways, Too

A subway and expressways may be in store for Greater Winnipeg, say city planners.

Eric W. Thrift, director of the Metropolitan Planning Commission, said there was a "tremendous value" in both the Norman D. Wilson and Wilbur Smith traffic reports.

Transit expert Wilson advocated a subway for the city. The Wilbur Smith report recommended a network of expressways.

Mr. Thrift said both reports now would have to be studied and a program arrived at which would be the best treatment for Greater Winnipeg.

COMPROMISE

This might involve a compromise solution in which some recommendations of both reports would be undertaken. There would not be enough money for all recommendations in both reports to be carried out.

Mr. Thrift said it would be a mistake to look (at) one report as black and the other as white, and have the question degenerate into a war between those who want a subway and those who favor expressways.

A joint committee of the Winnipeg Planning Commission, the traffic commission and the Greater Winnipeg Transit Commission at present is studying the Wilbur Smith Report.

WILSON, TOO

Mr. Thrift said it probably would be asked to study the Wilson report and come up with a "coherent scheme" based on both reports.

Evan McCormick, executive director of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, also said some points from both reports might have to be adopted.

Whether as a subway or network of expressways would best serve Winnipeg's needs was a question for an expert, he said.

But the subway proposal seemed an "ideal solution" if the city could afford it.
